Principal’s Statement on EU referendum result

2 June 2016

Given the ‘leave’ result in yesterday’s referendum, on behalf of the senior management team I would like to reassure you that, whilst the outcome has significant potential implications for higher education, nothing changes immediately and it is very much business as usual.

As you would expect, along with the rest of the higher education sector, we have been liaising with Universities UK and Universities Scotland, our representative bodies, on contingency planning for this scenario and so we are not unprepared.

Whilst there is currently uncertainty about how the exit negotiation process will work and the timescales involved, we currently anticipate that negotiations to leave would take until at least summer 2018. I will update you as and when timescales and processes become clear.

In the meantime, I emphasise that nothing changes immediately as a result of the referendum result.

With regards,

Professor Petra Wend PhD FRSA FRSE
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
